Armageddon

DOWN & DIRTY:
Action/Adventure: The world's best deep core oil drilling crew blasts off into space to land on a giant asteroid, plant a nuclear bomb, and blow it up before it hits the Earth.

NITTY GRITTY:
After a meteorite storm ravages New York City, NASA discovers that an asteroid the size of Texas is speeding toward Earth.

With just eighteen days before impact, NASA director Dan Truman (BILLY BOB THORNTON) discovers he has only one viable option -- drill a hole in the asteroid and explode a nuclear bomb hoping that the internal explosion will split the rock into two pieces that will miss Earth.

The government enlists Harry Stamper (BRUCE WILLIS) and his deep core oil drilling team, known to be the best in the world. The team -- which includes A.J. Frost(BEN AFFLECK) Chick Chapple (WILL PATTON); Rockhound (STEVE BUSCEMI); and Max (KEN CAMPBELL) train for their dangerous mission.

Blasting off into space aboard two space shuttles, they dock with a Russian space station where cosmonaut Lev Andropov (PETER STORMARE) joins them after an explosive fueling accident.

From there, the team races toward the asteroid. Encountering various obstacles and bureaucratic blunders back on Earth, Harry and his team race against time to drill eight hundred feet into the rock, plant the nuke, and blast off before the asteroid plummets into the Earth.

THE ENDING:
The drilling team has to re-wire the nukes after the government officials try to set them off early. Now someone will have to stay on the asteroid and fire them manually. So, they draw straws ( where did they get straws in space?) and Frost gets the short straw. But, Harry can't have him die on the asteroid, Frost has to go back and marry his daughter Grace (LIV TYLER), so Harry stays and blows the asteroid and saves the world. Now all high schools will be named after him.

WHAT EVERYONE WILL BE TALKING ABOUT:
The special effects are GREAT, but why would NASA take machine guns into space? Were they expecting trouble from some bad asteroidians?
