DOWN &
DIRTY:
Comedy/Animated: An ant recruits
a group of insect circus
performers, believing them to be
fierce warriors, hoping they'll
defend his colony from a gang of
greedy grasshoppers.
NITTY GRITTY:
Every summer, the hungry
grasshoppers descend on Ant
Island eating a large portion of
the ants' annual food harvest.
But this time, an ant, Flik
(voice of DAVE FOLEY),
accidentally causes the food
offering to be lost. When the
grasshoppers arrive and see no
food they're not very happy.
The leader, Hopper (voice of
KEVIN SPACEY), threatens the ants
and gives them until the end of
the summer to gather up another
offering.
After the grasshoppers leave, the
Queen (voice of PHYLLIS DILLER)
gets the colony working double
time gathering food. Most of the
ants don't believe they'll be
able to meet the quota and they
fear there won't be any food left
over for them.
Realizing this is all his fault,
Flik leaves to find some bigger
bugs to fight the grasshoppers.
Only Dot (voice of HAYDEN
PANETTIERE)believes Flik's plan
will work, but the other ants
agree just to get Flik out of
their way.
Flik finds his
"warriors," but they
are just some lowly insect circus
performers who've just been
fired. Among them is Manny(voice
of JONATHAN HARRIS), a praying
mantis magician, his partner,
Gypsy (voice of MADELINE KAHN), a
multicolored moth; and Rosie
(voice of BONNIE HUNT), a black
widow spider.
Also in the troupe is Slim (voice
of DAVID HYDE PIERCE), an
intellectual walking stick;
Heimlich (voice of JOE RANFT), a
scaredy-cat overweight
caterpillar; Francis (voice of
DENIS LEARY), a manly ladybug;
Dim (voice of BRAD GARRETT), a
dimwitted rhino beetle; and Tuck
& Roll (voice of MICHAEL
McSHANE), a pair of acrobatic
Hungarian pill bugs who always
smile because they can't
understand a word anyone is
saying.
Believing that Flik has hired
them for their circus act, the
insects head back with him to the
island. When they and Flik learn
of the others' true identity,
it's clear the ants may be in
trouble when the grasshoppers
return.
THE ENDING:
Flik discovers that Hopper and
the other grasshoppers are afraid
of 'the bird', so the ants and
the circus insects build a giant
fake bird. The grasshoppers
return and are mad because the
ants haven't gathered their food.
The ants launch the fake bird and
it scares most of the
grasshoppers away. Then the
'bird' catches fire and Hopper
sees through the deception.
Hopper goes after Flik and Dot.
When all looks lost, Flik gets an
idea and maneuvers Hopper to the
nest of the 'real' bird. The bird
grabs Hopper and feeds him to her
hungry chicks. End of Hopper.
Flik is a hero and he and the
other ants live happily ever
after.
