Enemy of
the State
DOWN &
DIRTY:
Suspense/Thriller: Having
received evidence concerning a
government-based murder, a lawyer
finds his life turned upside
down.
NITTY GRITTY:
Robert Dean (WILL SMITH) is a
Washington, DC-based labor lawyer
hoping to expose a local mobster,
Pintero (TOM SIZEMORE). With
evidence supplied by his
informant contact, Rachel Banks
(LISA BONET), Dean puts the
squeeze on Pintero who threatens
to kill him unless he confesses
to his informant's identity.
Meanwhile, a high-ranking
National Security Agency
official, Thomas Reynolds (JON
VOIGHT), has a congressman (JASON
ROBARDS) killed. The congressman
opposed a new surveillance bill.
After the murder, Reynolds
discovers a hidden camera has
captured the whole event on
videotape. They try to kill the
camera's owner, photographer
Daniel Zavitz (JASON LEE), who is
preparing to take it to the
press. During a chase, Zavitz
runs into Dean and secretly
places the video in his shopping
bags.
Reynolds sends a group of covert
operatives, including Krug (JAKE
BUSEY), Pratt (BARRY PEPPER),
Jones (SCOTT CAAN), Fiedler (JACK
BLACK) and Jamie (JAMIE KENNEDY),
to discover what Dean may know
about the video. In the process,
they destroy his life by having
him lose his job, his credit, and
his wife.
Dean goes to Rachel and finds
that she's in the same
predicament, but she tells him
about Brill (GENE HACKMAN), a
former intelligence operative.
THE ENDING:
Rachel is killed and Dean
realizes that Brill may be the
only person able to help him.
They get together and turn the
tables on Reynolds by planting
listening devices and
surveillance cameras on him.
They trick Reynolds and his thugs
into going to Pintero's hangout
where they get into a gun battle
and all the bad guys are killed.
Dean and Brill survive and go
their separate ways.
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BE
TALKING ABOUT:
Paranoia. A government
agency that can ruin your life?
Haven't they ever heard of the
