Godzilla
DOWN &
DIRTY:
Action/Adventure: A small team of
specialists tries to find a HUGE
reptile that's ravaging New York
City.
NITTY GRITTY:
Dr. Nick Tatopoulos (MATTHEW
BRODERICK) is a biologist from
the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission who's studying the
molecular effects of radiation on
earthworms near Chernobyl.
Whisked away by Colonel Hicks
(KEVIN DUNN) and his military
team, Nick discovers that he's
been called in for a bigger
problem, a several hundred-foot
tall reptilian beast, called
Godzilla, has attacked a Japanese
ship.
In New York City, a TV news
research assistant, Audrey (MARIA
PITILLO), is begging her boss,
news anchor Charles Caiman (HARRY
SHEARER), for more exposure, but
he's too busy and vain to help
her.
Godzilla roars into the city and
destroys big parts of it. And
Audrey thinks she has her scoop.
She and Nick used to be a
'couple' years ago and when she
sees him on TV, she sets out to
find him.
Nick believes that Godzilla can
reproduce asexually (that's
without a mate) and may have
already laid many eggs. Audrey
steals one of Nick's videotapes
and airs a story that gets Nick
kicked off the project.
Philippe Roache (JEAN RENO), a
French Secret Service agent who's
working undercover as an
insurance company representative,
grabs Nick and they set off to
find Godzilla's nest.
Upset that she may have ruined
Nick's career, Audrey takes off
with her cameraman,
"Animal" (HANK AZARIA),
and follows Nick and the French
team in and under New York.
THE ENDING:
Nick and the French team discover
Godzilla's eggs in Madison Square
Garden. After several close calls
as the eggs hatch, they call in a
military air strike that blows up
the Garden and the 'Zilla
yunguns. This upsets Momma 'Zilla
who chases Nick and associates
through Manhattan....man, what a
taxi-cab!
Anyway, Nick maneuvers the
monster unto the Brooklyn Bridge
where she/he/it becomes ensnared
in the supporting cables. Another
military plane fires its missiles
and puts an end to Momma. But, to
leave the door open for a sequel,
we sneak back to Madison Square
Garden just in time to see one
last 'Zilla egg hatch.
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BE
TALKING ABOUT:
Size really DIDN'T
matter, a better story WOULDA.
