DIRTY:
Sci-fi/Thriller: The inhabitants
of Earth prepare for the
devastating impact of an
approaching comet.
NITTY GRITTY:
Leo (ELIJAH WOOD) is a
fourteen-year-old astronomy
student who photographs a
previously unknown comet that's
fast approaching Earth. Although
he was only hoping to have his
classmate, Sarah (LEELEE
SOBIESKI), notice him, a year
later he finds that the comet --
a seven mile wide chunk of dirty
ice -- has been named after him.
Jenny Lerner (TÉA LEONI) is a TV
reporter who believes she's got
the scoop on a Washington sex
scandal that involves President
Beck (MORGAN FREEMAN) after his
cabinet secretary, Alan
Rittenhouse (JAMES CROMWELL),
mysteriously resigns.
Searching for a THE woman named
"Ellie", Jenny
discovers that Ellie is actually
E-L-E for Extinction Level Event
and refers to the comet that is
headed straight to Earth.
The President has sent a crew of
astronauts to intercept and land
on the comet. The Team includes
astronauts Andrea Baker (MARY
McCORMACK), Oren Monash (RON
ELDARD), Gus Partenza (JON
FAVREAU) , Spurgeon 'Fish' Tanner
(ROBERT DUVALL), the last man to
walk on the moon. Their plan is
to plant several nuclear
explosives inside the comet and
blast it from its current
trajectory.
The Messiah space screw land on
the comet and place the nuclear
bombs. Conditions on the comet
prevent them from placing the
bombs correctly and they lose one
of the crew. When the bombs are
exploded it just breaks the comet
into two comets..one small, one
BIG.
The government has a back up
plan, (don't they always?) it has
set up a national lottery where a
million citizens and VIPs will be
chosen to live underground in an
"ark" to repopulate the
country after the effects of the
comets.
Leo and his family and neighbors
are selected to be saved in the
ark. But because of a government
snafu, Sarah's parents are not on
the list and she stays with them.
Leo goes with his parents to the
ark, but at the last minute goes
back for Sarah.
THE ENDING:
Astronaut "Fish" Tanner
figures they can use the
remaining nukes and crash the
Messiah spacecraft into the tail
of the comet and that will take
out the comet. The crew, knowing
they will die, decide to try it.
The plan works, the BIG comet is
blown to smithereens.
Unfortunately the smaller comet
crashes into the Atlantic and the
tidal wave takes out New York
City and most of the eastern
seaboard.
Leo gets Sarah and her baby
brother and motorcycles to higher
ground. Sarah's parents are
killed but Leo and Sarah make it.
TV reporter Lerner goes to her
childhood beach with her father
to await the killer tidal wave.
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BE
TALKING ABOUT:
Téa Leoni's wooden
acting. I actually cheered when
the tidal wave took her out.
