Little
Voice
DOWN &
DIRTY:
Drama: A young woman's amazing
ability to imitate legendary
female vocalists draws the
attention of a sleazy local
talent agent who hopes to make it
to the big time.
NITTY GRITTY:
LV (JANE HORROCKS), is a young
woman who never ventures outside
her Northern English home. She
spends most of her time in the
attic listening to albums her
deceased father left her,
featuring the likes of Judy
Garland, Marilyn Monroe and
Shirley Bassey.
Her mother, Mari (BRENDA
BLETHYN), couldn't be more the
opposite. An obnoxious,
boisterous woman, Mari can't
understand her daughter and
constantly picks at her. Mari
hangs out with her friend, Sadie
(ANNETTE BADLAND), and visits the
local pub desperately trying to
pick up any man whom she thinks
might make her happy.
Mari meets Ray Say (MICHAEL
CAINE), a sleazy talent agent
who's never been successful in
his life. Mari brings Ray back to
her place for a romantic
encounter. While there, Ray hears
the most miraculous voice
emanating from the attic and
immediately sees LV as his ticket
to fame and fortune. LV sings,
not in her mousey voice, but
booms out classic songs that
sound exactly like the original
artists.
Ray convinces LV to sing and soon
has her booked at a local
nightclub run by Mr. Boo (JIM
BROADBENT). LV sings and the
crowd goes wild. An assistant to
London agent Bunnie Morris is in
the audience and uses his cell
phone to let Morris hear LV's
act. The assistant tells Ray that
Morris will attend tomorrow
night's performance to see Little
Voice in person.
Ray realizes that this is his big
break. He spends all his money,
even sells his car, to fix up the
club for LV's performance.
THE ENDING:
When Ray comes to pick up LV and
Mari for the club, LV says that
she agreed to just one show. Ray
tries to convince her to go, but
she refuses.
Ray goes to the club to try and
stall for time. But LV never
shows and the London agent
leaves. Ray is ruined. He's broke
and now men are looking for him
because he owes them money
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BE
TALKING ABOUT:
The fact that Jane
Horrocks as Little Voice (LV)
does all her own singing. No
lip-synching.
Runner-Up: Michael Caine's 'song
of ruin' at the end of the film.
It's hilarious!
