The Siege
DOWN &
DIRTY:
Drama: As terrorist attacks
cripple New York City, an FBI
agent, a CIA operative, and a
military general try to find and
stop the terrorists.
NITTY GRITTY:
After the U.S. military secretly
kidnaps an Arab sheik in a Middle
Eastern desert, terrorist attacks
begin sprouting up in Brooklyn.
Anthony Hubbard (DENZEL
WASHINGTON), the head of the
joint FBI/NYPD terrorism task
force, along with partner Frank
Haddad (TONY SHALHOUB),
immediately step into action.
Hubbard learns that Elise Kraft
(ANNETTE BENING), a CIA
operative, is snooping around a
bus destroyed in a recent attack.
Her presence immediately arouses
his suspicions. Knowing that
she's out of her jurisdiction,
Hubbard detains her, but soon
realizes her knowledge of
American/Arab relations will
prove helpful since the
terrorists appear to be part of
some militant Arab group.
More terrorist attacks occur and
despite Hubbard's discovery of
several militant
"cells," the President
enacts the War Powers Act. This
declares martial law and puts the
Brooklyn in the hands of General
William Devereaux (BRUCE WILLIS).
Deveraux is prepared to take
whatever steps necessary to solve
the problem and immediately
deploys his forces.
Hubbard is distrustful of Kraft,
who turns out to know more and be
much different than she initially
appears, along with having an
association with Samir Nazhde
(SAMI BOUAJILA), an Arab national
who might possibly be involved in
the attacks.
He also disagrees with
Devereaux's militant and often
barbaric solution to the problem.
THE ENDING:
Hubbard follows Elise and Samir
to a bathhouse. Turns out Samir
was a CIA operative working with
Elise, but he now double crosses
her and straps on a bomb to
detonate in the crowd outside.
Elise tries to stop him and
Hubbard shows up. Samir grabs
Elise as a shield, but she pulls
away and Samir shoots her.
Hubbard and his partner Frank
shoot and kill Samir. Elise dies
in the bathhouse.
Hubbard confronts General
Deveraux. He pulls out court
papers ordering the Army to
release the Arab-Americans being
detained in the stadium. Deveraux
refuses and Hubbard arrests him.
Deveraux orders his men to stand
ready to fire. Several FBI agents
surround the military men and
Deveraux changes his mind and
surrenders.
