Titanic
DOWN &
DIRTY:
Drama: Two lovers from different
parts of society must deal with
their differences and the fact
that they're on board the doomed
ship, the Titanic.
NITTY GRITTY:
Brock Lovett (BILL PAXTON) and
his oceanographic crew have been
searching the wreck of the R.M.S.
Titanic for a huge blue gem,
"The Heart of the
Ocean," originally worn by
Louis XVI that today would be one
of the most valuable jewels in
the world.
His crew finds a painting of a
nude woman wearing what appears
to the necklace he's looking for.
Thousands of miles away, Rose
(GLORIA STUART), a survivor of
the famous tragedy, sees the
story on TV and recognizes the
sketch.
Rose flies out to the middle of
the ocean to meet Lovett miles
above where the wreck lies, she
explains that she's the person in
the sketch and then goes to tell
her story about the Titanic.
Eighty-five years earlier, as a
young woman, Rose DeWitt Bukater
(KATE WINSLET) comes from high
society and is engaged to marry
tycoon Cal Hockley (BILLY ZANE),
a wealthy man who doesn't treat
her well.
Her mother urges Rose to put up
with his behavior so that they'll
remain in the wealthy upper class
of life. Rose, however, can't
stand it anymore, and once at
sea, climbs onto the stern
railing of the Titanic, preparing
to jump to her death.
Her luck changes when Jack Dawson
(LEONARDO DiCAPRIO), a third
class passenger who won his way
on board in a card game, stops
her from jumping.
A romance flowers between the
two, much to the dismay of Cal
and Ruth.
Molly Brown (KATHY BATES) thinks
it's a hoot that Jack's stirring
things up a bit and helps him.
Rose and Jack's love is
threatened, when Cal's assistant,
Lovejoy (DAVID WARNER), plants
the jewels on Jack and accuses
him of theft.
Then the Titanic hits THE iceberg
and begins to sink. As the ship
takes on water Captain Smith
(BERNARD HILL) and Blue Star
director Bruce Ismay (JONATHAN
HYDE) try to figure out what to
do.
Amid the chaos, Jack and Rose try
to stay together as long as they
can.
THE ENDING:
Jack and Rose climb to the very
rear of the ship as it sinks.
They are among the last to go
into the water. Jack finds a
piece of wood and pushes Rose up
on it. There's no room for him so
he stays in the water talking to
Rose, telling her to be strong
and she's gonna survive.
Jack freezes in the water and
sinks to the bottom of the ocean.
Rose is saved and lives a full
exciting life.
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BE
TALKING ABOUT:
In the final scene, did
"old" Rose die in her
sleep or just dream about going
back to all her friends....and
Jack on the Titanic?
