The
Waterboy
DOWN &
DIRTY:
Comedy: A socially inept
31-year-old water boy becomes a
tackling sensation when he starts
playing football for the local
college team.
NITTY GRITTY:
Bobby Boucher (ADAM SANDLER) is a
socially inept, 31-year-old man
who still lives with his
overprotective Mama (KATHY BATES)
in their Louisiana bayou home.
Bobby is the waterboy for the
Cougars, the state's best team,
then he gets fired by coach Red
Beaulieu (JERRY REED) for
"being stupid" and
distracting the players.
Dejected, Bobby approaches Coach
Klein (HENRY WINKLER) of the
South Central LSU football team
and asks to be the team's
waterboy. Klein, who suffered a
nervous breakdown after Red stole
his play book years earlier, is
still a basket case. The team
hasn't won a game in years so
Klein gives Bobby the job.
Arriving on the field, the
football players start to pick on
Bobby. Klein tells him he should
stand up for himself or he'll be
walked over for the rest of his
life. The next time a player
teases him, Bobby's years of
taking abuse boil over and he
races onto the field and tackles
a player with a bone-jarring hit.
Coach Klein is stunned along with
the football players. Klein
sensing Bobby's potential, wants
him to play on the team, but must
first convince Bobby's Mama. She,
wants nothing of the sorts for
her son, and refuses to grant let
Bobby play.
After another talk with Coach
Klein Bobby decides to try out
for the team and soon becomes a
big football star.
Bobby tries to keep his playing a
secret from his Mama, while also
dealing with his
"girlfriend," Vicki
Vallencourt (FAIRUZA BALK), who's
just been released from jail.
Bobby's team is matched up
against his old boss Coach Red
Beaulieu and the Cougars for the
championship.
THE ENDING:
Bobby is kicked off the team
after the Cougar coach informs
them that Bobby doesn't have a
high school diploma. Bobby
studies hard and gets his GED.
Bobby rejoins the team and beats
his old nemesis Coach Red
Beaulieu.
WHAT EVERYONE WILL BE
TALKING ABOUT:
Kathy Bates is a hoot as
Bobby's mama.
